The 2011 Idaho State FFA Distinguished Service Award was presented to local business owners Johnny and Vicki Greenfield of Greenfield Custom Meats in April at the Idaho State FFA Convention in Twin Falls. The Idaho FFA Association Executive Board and the leadership of the Idaho Vocational Agricultural Teachers Association (IVATA) nominated Greenfield Custom Meats. This award was presented for outstanding service and support to the Idaho FFA Association and agricultural education in Idaho. This honor is reserved each year for business and companies which have demonstrated strong support for the FFA at their local level and for the state as a whole.
Not only were Greenfields recognized at the State level, but also within their local Meridian FFA Chapter as well. Greenfields’ were presented as 2011 Honorary Chapter FFA Degree Members on May 2 at the Meridian FFA Chapter’s 71st annual banquet. Honorary membership may include farmers, school superintendents, principles, members of boards of education, chapter advisors, teachers, staff members in agricultural education, business people, and others who are helping to advance agricultural education and the FFA, and who have rendered outstanding service. Honorary members are elected to honorary membership by a majority vote of the members present at any regular meeting or convention.
“It is always a pleasure to receive honorary members into the FFA. The purpose of this ceremony is to recognize, from time to time, the efforts of others made in our behalf,” says Meridian FFA President Susan Schram. “On behalf of every member, I wish to say we are proud to have you as honorary members. May this affiliation prove valuable to all. I impress upon you that we look to you for counsel and guidance. It is because of the great respect we have for you that you have been elected to honorary membership."
The Greenfield family started Greenfield Custom Meats in 1967. Bill and Jean Greenfield, their son Johnny, and Jeans' father LeRoy Caddy were all involved building Greenfield Custom Meats from the ground up. Together they built the building structure for the business, including the kill floor. Bill Greenfield learned to cut meat and run a meat plant from his father in law, LeRoy. Bill passed his trade skills on to his son Johnny who worked at Greenfield’s since he was in junior high school when the business started. This makes Johnny Greenfield a third-generation meat cutter. Johnny was also active in 4-H and the Meridian High School’s FFA program where he earned his State Farmer Degree as a junior.

When Bill Greenfield retired in 1996, Johnny and his wife, Vicki, bought the business. They have been successful business owners for the past 16 years. Johnny and Vicki have raised two daughters who grew up completing a variety of agricultural based 4-H projects. Their oldest daughter followed in her father's footsteps and was also involved in the Meridian FFA Chapter. She went on to attend the University of Idaho and graduated with a bachelor in Agricultural Communications. The Greenfield’s youngest daughter is currently serving aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in the United States Navy.
Greenfield Custom Meats focus and direction has always been built on providing a healthy, wholesome product to the consumer. Customers can enjoy fresh, local meat cuts from the retail department or hand raise their own livestock for butcher and custom wrapping. For the past 44 years, Greenfield Custom Meats has worked hard to build a great reputation, starting from ownership, to their employees, and filtering on down to customers receiving a great tasting product with service.
Greenfield Custom Meats has trustworthy, knowledgeable and hardworking employees, many of which have had long term careers with their business. One employee has worked for Greenfields for over 30 years, and several others have worked for over 15 years.
Johnny and Vicki take great pride in supporting their community. They do this in various ways, but especially like to focus on 4-H and FFA youth, the future of agriculture. From the very beginning, Greenfield Custom Meats has supported the agriculture community. Greenfield Custom Meats actively supports many fairs in Idaho, including the Canyon County Fair, Owyhee County Fair, Elmore County Fair, Western Idaho Fair, Payette County Fair, Gem County Fair, and even Humboldt County fair from Nevada.
Johnny devotes many hours showing 4-H groups various lamb and pork cuts of meat so students will better understand their animal project goals. He provides market animals for grading practice to the FFA students from Kuna and Meridian High Schools. Both high schools’ meat teams also practice at Greenfield’s for their State and National competitions.
Vicki Greenfield says it best, "We love seeing the kids learn and grow, and are proud to be a part of that process.”
